PAAK, (Parent Advocates for Awesome Kids) was founded in December of 2012 by Angeletta Giles and her daughter, Londyn who had been recently diagnosed with autism at the age of 4 earlier that year. The mission of PAAK is to inform, mentor, and support families through prevention and intervention services, by empowering families to promote the best interest of each individual child.
We wanted to create a support system that would help families with the evaluation process and emphasize the critical importance of early interventions to families who have concerns related to their child’s development, including autism spectrum disorder. Families and child care providers had concerns about how a child was learning, behaving, and interacting with others. PAAK’s goal is to encourage and help families seek assistance in order to promote the best interests of each individual child. Since 2012, PAAK has provided information about developmental evaluations in small group sessions, webinars, and academic support for medical students across the country. We have also received high honors by being the 2016 Ambassadors for Autism as well has being featured in the Autism Speaks “Book of Hope” which will be in waiting rooms around the world. Angeletta and Londyn’s journey will reach parents who need hope.
We take joy in providing one-on-one family support to help families navigate the system (eg. help with completing paperwork, help the family prepare for an evaluation, and assist families who “get stuck” on a specific step). We’ve reached families as far as Germany.
#StrikeOutAutism is one of our favorite events to host. It allows families to connect with the community when often times they felt alienated. #StrikeOutAutism has drawn a crowd of 200 participants and is continuously growing. KARK did a special news spot just to highlight this event.
The proceeds of this event typically funds our #Supermoms Pampering Party. This event is so exciting for me! One thing that I've learned is special needs mom rarely get to pamper themselves. I know this first hand. This special event includes hairstylists, make-up artists, masseuses, and professional photographers who have committed to donating their time and services to provide an afternoon of pampering and keepsake photos for each mom. 20 moms will be nominated to attend this event by clinicians, counselors, and teachers, and the event will last 3 hours. They will also enjoy sweet treats and hors d'oeuvres.
